No. The title of this article is not click-bait. In fact, I honestly wish it was. Recently, after much praise for their sudden and shocking decision to recast and re-shoot with Christopher Plummer – six weeks prior to the film’s scheduled release, new reports have come out stating Mark Wahlberg was paid 1500 times more than what Michelle Williams received.
Yeah, that was not an error. Not a typo. Multiply what Ms. Williams got for going back to re-shoot her scenes by FIFTEEN-HUNDRED… and that’s how much Mr. Wahlberg was paid to do the exact same thing. Criticism has been running rampant, and rightfully so since this news broke. How Marky Mark or the people behind this decision found this to be the least bit acceptable, truly is baffling.
After countless sexual misconduct allegations against Kevin Spacey, director Ridley Scott recast-ed John Paul Getty with the older Christopher Plummer and supposedly got his cast and crew to do just over a week of re-shoots for a reported $10 million. Scott had been quoted on more than one occasion saying that all the performers did so at “no extra cost.”
Back in November The Washington Post reported that there was already a huge disparity in pay between the film’s two stars… and NOW USA Today has just recently revealed that Wahlberg earned $1.5 million compared to Williams WHOPPING $1,000. ARE YOU FUGGINNNN KIDDIN MEH?! William’s, mind you, is astounding in this role – a performance that earned her a recent Golden Globe nomination. Wahlberg AT BEST is mediocre… While it’s Williams and Plummer who carry this movie from the beginning scenes to the final credits.
But, that’s not even the point. Regardless of who was great, who was average, who lifted the film and who this production could’ve done without… the point is… you don’t let this happen. You just don’t.
And perhaps the most troubling thing of all, is the fact that each of the two are represented by the same agency – William Morris Endeavor. An agency which clearly decided to make Wahlberg their first priority and leave Williams by the wayside. An agency which decided that Mr. Wahlberg was deserving of $1.5 million for the re-shoot and that Ms. Williams was deserving of not half that. Not a third. But, a fraction I can’t even fucking give you. Marky Mark, wake up. William Morris Endeavor, wake up. America, WAKE UP.
